Wildwood Boardwalk | Forsaken Fotos |
It took me a really long time to decide which of the places I love most to post about. I finally decided this was the best one.
That's the Wildwood Boardwalk in Wildwood, New Jersey. Wildwood is probably my favorite place on the whole east coast to visit.
Wildwood and Cape May are where most of the most important parts of my family history on my mother's side took place after they came to the United States from Sweden. My grandfathers (adopted and biological) were both fishermen there. My mothers (adopted and bio) and aunts and uncles were born and raised there. Most of my cousins were born there. We spent a lot of summers and Christmases and Thanksgivings there.
Not many of us live there anymore. We've spread out all over the country. It's a little sad, but that's what happens when all the men in a family do tours in various branches of the military, and some of the women marry military men and laborers who have to follow their work around the country.
I've been trying for fifteen years to convince Big that we need to visit there. Hopefully one day soon he'll have the time, and we'll have the money. I think he'll love it there. It's so beautiful.
It's where I found my love for the ocean. I'd spend days walking the shore, picking up jellyfish with a wooden spoon and throwing them back into the ocean. I was a kid, and I was convinced that that would save them. Back then, I believed that all God's creatures deserved a second chance, and I didn't understand that jellyfish were mean as fuck.
I still believe in second chances, but these days, if I saw a jellyfish on the shore, I'd leave it there. There are so many! And I doubt I was actually saving them, anyway.
