30 Days of Little L - Day 6

Day 6 - Favorite superhero and why

I never really got into comics as a kid because my dad always said that was "boy stuff." When I was a kid, there wasn't all this pushback on gender lines and things like superheroes and such, so when my dad said comics were "boy stuff," I took that as gospel, and left them alone. I was already the "weird" kid because we moved around a lot and I liked to read, so I did whatever I could to fit in, and that included not doing "boy stuff."

I was a dumb kid.

It wasn't until I was a teenager that I started to push back and do whatever I wanted, regardless of traditional gender lines, but I still never really got into comics or superheroes. I was too busy doing other things, like getting kicked out of the mall and playing pool at the bowling alley (even though I was never really good at it).

And then Jessica Jones was released on Netflix. That was all she wrote. I was 35 years old, and I was hooked on a comic book superhero. Good lord. What would my younger self say?

Jessica Jones and I have a lot in common. We're both survivors of abuse. We both suffer from depression and have issues with anger. We're both much stronger than we'd like to admit (though, obviously, she's way stronger than I am). We're both extremely resilient. We both struggle with addiction. It's the perfect fit.

But beyond our similarities, I love everything Jessica Jones represents. She's a strong, yet flawed, female character who accepts her flaws as much as she loathes them. She's a woman who allowed herself to (briefly) go down a dark path, and then pulled herself out of it and started making up for her past. She's feminine and tough, two things I was taught were mutually exclusive (but clearly aren't).

She's not perfect, but she's perfect for me, and that is why I love her.
